What Helped Me Heal After Childbirth :- Food, hormones, and gentle care in the newborn phase

A Happy Mother Nourishes a Happy Baby

Understanding the postpartum body, relaxin hormone, and the role of traditional Indian foods

After childbirth, a mother’s body doesn’t return to normal overnight.
I learned that the postpartum phase is not just about caring for a newborn — it’s also about allowing a mother’s body and mind to heal gently.

One of the reasons this phase feels so different is a hormone called relaxin.

What Is Relaxin and Why It Matters After Birth

Relaxin is a natural hormone that increases during pregnancy and continues to stay in the body after delivery.

Its role is simple but powerful:

  • It keeps joints and ligaments soft
  • It allows the body to slowly recover from childbirth
  • It signals the body to move gently, not rush

Because of relaxin, many new mothers feel:

  • Physically sensitive or weak
  • Emotionally more delicate
  • In need of rest and warmth

This isn’t a weakness — it’s the body asking for care.

Why Nourishment Becomes Essential in the Postpartum Phase

When the body is softer and more sensitive due to relaxin, proper nourishment becomes a form of support.

I learned that warm, grounding food helped me feel:

  • More stable
  • More energetic
  • More emotionally balanced

Indian postpartum traditions understand this deeply.

Some foods i had involved daily for first 6 months of postpartum are shared below

Indian Foods That Support a New Mother’s Recovery

🌰 Gond (Edible Gum) Laddoos

Gond laddoos are often prepared specially for new mothers.
They are traditionally believed to:

  • Provide warmth to the body
  • Support strength and recovery
  • Offer slow, sustained energy

They felt especially comforting during long, tiring days. Specially it helps to deal with weakness during recovery and breast feeding.

🌿 Methi (Fenugreek) Laddoos

Methi laddoos are another time-honoured preparation.

They are valued for:

  • Supporting digestion
  • Helping the body regain balance
  • Nourishing the body gently

Including them regularly made my recovery feel steadier. Methi laddoos are not great in taste but great in giving new mom strength and energy

🌾 Bajra and Other Millets

Millets like Bajra, Jowar, Ragi are often included in postpartum meals because they are:

  • Filling and nourishing
  • Grounding for the body
  • Known for providing long-lasting energy

Simple meals made with these grains helped sustain me through unpredictable days.

🥜 Dry Fruits and Nuts

Almonds, dates, cashews, and other dry fruits — often soaked or lightly roasted — are commonly given to new mothers.

They:

  • Add natural energy
  • Support overall nourishment
  • Are easy to include in daily meals

Even small portions made a noticeable difference. Specially helps your bones and maintains your emotional balance

How Diet, Hormones, and Care Come Together

When relaxin keeps the body soft and healing, food becomes fuel for recovery.

A nourished body supports:

  • Better emotional balance
  • More patience
  • A calmer presence around the baby

And babies sense this calm.

A well-supported mother naturally creates a more peaceful space for her newborn.

What This Taught Me as a New Parent

The postpartum phase is not about bouncing back.
It’s about slowing down.

Traditional food, rest, and gentle care work together to support a mother while her body gradually regains strength.

Because when a mother feels nourished and supported, that sense of safety quietly reaches the baby too.

Gentle closing thought

Caring for a newborn begins with caring for the mother — and our traditional wisdom has always known this.
